| CBC should receive stable, multi-year funding: report
If the Liberals are so committed to the CBC why after 12 years in power did they bleed it to death? What I find most appalling is that so many Canadians use the mantle of the CBC as the cultural glue that holds us together as Canadians. Many believing without this organization we would disappear overnight. I find it highly offensive that if you are that weak minded and rely on the CBC to identify yourself as a Canadian you have much bigger problems. I am so tired of the anti-Americanism that is spewed daily from the mother corporation I almost gag. The world is changing rapidly into a global community and the younger generation dismisses the CBC as irrelevant at best. It is merely the weak minded who cling to these notions of the CBC as a Canadian icon. If it became a user pay organization that relies on subscriptions and donations that would be the true test of it's utility.

Those areas are not very sexy, but have a large impact on public health. The stem cell issue may end up like breast cancer, but with its own color ribbon. Lots of money will be spent with little reduction in the leading causes of death and sickness. Speaking of public funds for stem-cell research, you can find out the latest on California's Institute of Regenerative Medicine (funded by voter-approved Prop. 71 in Nov. 2004) here. Meghan O'Rourke started brains a-churning with her nuanced analysis of Linda Hirshman's Get to Work: A Manifesto for Women of the World. For many readers, the central point for debate is the definition of a "good" life.

No one should be barred from getting a job, from renting a home, from contributing to our society and making the most of their talents simply because of their sexual orientation. We also must strengthen law enforcement and prosecution against discriminatory acts of violence against gays, lesbians and transgender Americans. Hate crimes undermine the fundamental principal of our country - that all men and women are created equal - and I will fight to pass federal hate crimes legislation to ensure that for the LGBT community. What do you believe is needed to help open up public discourse about racial issues, allowing people of all races to speak honestly without fear of being shut down by accusations of racism? - Deborah Cloudwalker, 52, Oakland Sen.
US services data, bid talk help FTSE gain 1.5 pct
Other European shares also ended higher, mirroring a trend in U.S. stock markets after a better-than-expected reading for a gauge of U.S. service sector activity. See [ID:nWEN4340] "Wall Street has been generally impressed with the economic data as this is heaping on the pressure for the Fed to effect another rate cut later in the month which will further boost the popularity of stocks," said Jimmy Yates, a trader at CMC Markets. The UK's blue-chip index has now fallen over 9 percent this year on fears of a U.S. recession and further credit-related writedowns by financial institutions. Among shares, talk of a rescue deal for ailing U.S. bond insurer Ambac Financial Group (ABK.N: Quote, Profile, Research) boosted insurers. Prudential (PRU.L: Quote, Profile, Research) was 6.8 percent higher after shareholders in China's Ping An Insurance (2318.HK: Quote, Profile, Research) (601318.SS: Quote, Profile, Research) approved a plan to raise about $17 billion, prompting fresh speculation it could take a stake in a European insurer.
Checking 2nd bag?
The fees are another sign of major airlines' growing movement to "a la carte" pricing, in which customers pay separate charges for certain services such as priority seating and food. Low-cost carriers already routinely charge such fees. Other airlines likely will adopt similar baggage fees, said David Stempler, president of the Air Travelers Association. He predicted those fees will be followed by other new fees as major airlines charge for services previously covered by the cost of a ticket. US Airways, which has its largest hub in Charlotte, announced the new $25 fee for checking a second bag Tuesday. Similar to one adopted by United Airlines three weeks ago, the fee is aimed to offset increased fuel prices, which have raised operating costs, US Airways officials said.
These Loans Were Made for Walking: The End of the Subprime Crisis
That would be a good payday even for the Wall Street crowd. Of course, the bank will take a big hit, since it will not be able to recover anything close to its original $400,000 loan, but that is not the homeowner's problem. Is it moral to just walk away from a loan and leave the bank holding the bag? That's an interesting question. We live in a country in which CEOs can run a corporation into the ground and then walk away with pay packages worth tens, or even hundreds, of millions of dollars. Equity and hedge fund managers, who rank among the richest people in the country, have successfully lobbied Congress so that they pay a lower tax rate on their earnings than schoolteachers and firefighters. After walking away with this multi-million dollar tax break, at least one prominent member of this crew has been leading the charge to cut Social Security, pointing out he doesn't need his Social Security check.
