Credit card industry tries to hook young people

All major banking institutions pay big money to colleges and universities for on-campus recruiting rights, offering students low initial interest rates and/or other sweetheart deals if they accept a credit card. The rest of us get solicitations through our phone or the mails.Seductive sales campaigns focus on high school graduates and for all kinds of items that TV, movies or society has told them they want, need, should have because they deserve it and others have, so why don't they? Car dealers offer "one-time sales events" to first-time wage earners, high-end electronic stores give 90-day-same-as-cash deals and guarantee that no one will be turned down, furniture showrooms offer newlyweds "no payments 'til next year," cell phones, Internet providers, cable companies, satellite dish outfits all make it sound as if you can't have a decent life without their help. All this has given birth to an additional parasite - the debt-consolidation, paycheck-cashing, payday-loan, instant-refinancing-of-your-car (and you get to keep your car - 'til they come to take it away) industry.Public schools teach kids how to drive, play sports, fit a condom, take birth control pills, find an abortionist or fill out a job application at McDonald's.

Temecula Valley district officials roll out hard budget numbers

In today's "mommy" world no one can do anything for themselves. So, when ESL kids come along demanding special treatment, I get a little irked. BTW, my father had polio and was handicapped his whole life, he also lost an eye as a teen ager. He did just fine, thank you, and I didn't know he was blind in one eye until I was 35!

Prep Teacher wrote on Feb 27, 2008 5:45 PM:Do you know what a prep teacher is and how often most schools get them? They make it sound like a helper that comes in and does stuff for the teacher. It's not that. They are a valuable part of each elemtary school. They are the librarian, PE teacher, Computer lab teacher, art or music teacher. Each school has a different kind. They teach a class their subject for 1 hour per week. So this gives the elementary teacher a whole 2 hours a week or prep time.

House price carcinoma

1) That we pass laws amending the constitution that give back to the States a right they had once, to control rents. Then pass a law in New South Wales that says no dwelling with a backyard can be rented for more than five hundred dollars a week.

This would force rents down everywhere, and house prices down. If the current rule of thumb prevails, no Sydney mansion in Point Piper would cost more than $500,000 after a while, and your average hovel in Coogee with a backyard, probably, no more than $120,000. Wouldn't that be nice.

(2) That we put the GST up to 11 per cent and with the extra money establish a State Bank that lends at five per cent, and only five per cent, unvaryingly, to first home buyers, couples married for three years, or couples with at least one child, or, yes, same-sex couples who have been together for three years, up to $200,000 and no more.

Financial Fitness Boot Camp kickoff: Meet the families

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- We have three families who will join the Consumer Connection Financial Fitness Boot Camp with cameras rolling -- we'll follow their progress every step of the way, and you can play along at home.

So let's meet the families and the trainers who will turn their financial flab to muscle:

Our first Boot Camp family: Jeremy and Stacy Ashe of Charlotte. Both are 29 years old and the proud parents of two young children. Jeremy is a restaurant manager and she raises the kids and works as a part time nurse.

When he first wrote to us, asking to be a part of Boot Camp, Jeremy wrote, "We have two car payments, 4 credit cards, cell phone bill, daycare expenses, and we rent a house in the University area for $1,100 a month. We are surviving and doing okay but would like to learn how to become more financially responsible and stable."

Some of the Ashes' goals? With little savings to show for their $80,000 a year income, they will focus on tracking their spending to understand where opportunities to save are.

JAQUITTA'S JOURNEY: Read Her Blog

I wanted to update you on what's been going on with me lately.

I have finally gotten adjusted to my new look and new super short hair. Everyone has been so kind about the new look. The compliments are so very flattering. I thank you very, very much. I love it too! It's soooooo easy... I wash it and go. I spray a leave in conditioner on it, and then I apply this butter cream called Miss Jessie's Curly Butter cream in my hair that Monica Pearson gave me and I'm out the door. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! The butter cream smells WONDERFUL, and it locks in my curls. I had heard about Miss Jessie's products before, but never tried them until Monica bought some for me. Now, I'm hooked and wanted to tell you about it as well. Thanks Monica!

I have had quite a few people who have asked who my hairstylist is now that I have this new look.

Billionaire joins charge on batteries

BILLIONAIRE corporate raider turned ecology activist Vincent Bollore today opened a factory to produce supercapacitators that can be used for electric cars that could fill the streets from Tokyo to Turin.

The €36 million ($60 million) factory, on the site of a family's paper business started in 1822, will produce 100,000 supercapacitators - electric energy storage elements - per year, and production can be ramped up quickly.

It is close to a plant that makes 10,000 lithium-metal-polymer batteries a year.

Investments in the project so far total at least €250 million ($420 million), Mr Bollore said during a trip to the site.

"When we started some 14 years ago with the idea of an electric car, everybody laughed at us," Mr Bollore said at the family manor where the factory inauguration was celebrated.
