Hardware Update: Toshiba to Abandon HD DVD

I was sort of rooting for the HD-DVD camp, even though I never spent any money on either. Now that the war is over, I'm just glad we have a winner. Its good to know that when I finally upgrade my livingroom set to High-Def I won't have to worry which format is best. .

Garrett says funds short for promises

Oklahoma schools, which haven't been given any new operations funds in several years, are already cash-strapped with higher utility and fuel costs.

Prorating state aid payments would short districts the state funds they've already factored into their budgets.

The Board of Education is expected to hear Garrett's request to ask for supplemental funding at its regular meeting next week. If approved, the measure would then head to lawmakers for consideration.

Primary grabs 52 per cent of Symbion

PRIMARY Health Care now holds 52.27 per cent of takeover target Symbion Health Ltd, up from 49.70 per cent on Friday, according to a substantial shareholder notice lodged with the stock exchange.

The level of acceptances - which includes acceptances under Primary's $2.65 billion offer and acceptance instructions under an institutional acceptance facility - means Primary is now poised to declare its offer unconditional. Symbion had said it would recommend the offer if Primary gained formal acceptances of more than 50.1 per cent and declared its bid unconditional. Primary is bidding $4.10 a share for Symbion. Symbion shares closed yesterday at $4.06.

Deal curbs Homemark hardsell tactics

CONSUMERS who were duped into paying postage for Homemark products they did not order will now have protection.

An agreement was reached yesterday with the trade and industry department’s consumer affairs division to halt unfair business practices.

The direct marketing group and vacuum manufacturer Kirby were taken to task this week by the consumer affair’s division following investigations into a number of consumer complaints.

In terms of agreements signed with Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa, the two companies are required to satisfy a number of requirements or face prosecution. This includes a R200000 fine or prosecution of senior company officials.

Homemark — which sells everything from blow-up beds, pain relievers and diet solutions to gym equipment — has come under fire for, among others, an SMS campaign which informs people they are winners of a competition they did not enter.

Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce pulls two off panel

As a Chamber member I invest annual dues to pay for business support services for large and small businesses, as well as good policy that will reflect what Chamber members want. I am curious to see if my annual dues are part of some illegal transition within the Chamber or part of a PAC that members are unaware of. Are they contracting a certain congressman's ex C.O.S.? The Chamber is funded heavily through membership dues and special events, meaning, without members there is no Chamber. Without members, Terry and Ken cannot maintain the lifestyles they have become accustomed to. One is the puppet master and the other the puppet. Let's get leadership without arrogance like Terry, and leadership with a backbone, unlike Ken. Kudos Caller for breaking the story! Kudos to Damon for wanting to check the books.

Clutter can be taxing: Rescue from piles of paper just a binder away

Michele Blake had a paper problem. Letters, catalogs, bills and work-related papers were cluttering up her North Easton, Mass., home. "I wasn't managing paper very well," Blake, 51, said. "I would look around, and all the clutter would really bother me."

Come tax time, she would have to hunt down everything she needed, and then she would dump all the receipts and other papers onto her desk and start to feel crushed under the weight of it all.

"I would feel overwhelmed by it," she said. "I had stuff all over, and I couldn't find something I needed, so it would take me a good week to get it together and work on it all."

It can be overwhelming enough just to think about doing your taxes. But if you're disorganized, tax time brings extra angst as you dread having to search for receipts and other documents you know you need but may not be able to find easily.

Taxpayers face a £94,000 bill to cover cost of MSPs' laptops

12 Sorry, you'll have to do better than that.I was talking about implementing an international standard which protects our public data from proprietary lock-in. Nothing to do with MS hating. If you disagree, you'll need to explain why you think it is better for our data to be beholden to a single, massive multinational company rather than open and accessible from any computer. .
