Britons Face Billion-Pound Interest Payback

One in four people is struggling with their debts as Britons collectively face a 93bn annual bill for interest.

At the same time, around three million people have taken out a debt consolidation loan to try to get on top of their borrowings.

Borrowing through credit cards, loans, overdrafts and mortgages has hit almost 1.4 trillion, according to comparison website uSwitch.com.

An estimated 9.5m people had "maxed out" on one form of credit during the past six months, while 38% have had a credit card application rejected, the group claims.

But nearly two-thirds of these failed to close down their existing credit facilities, and instead went on to rack up a further 2,300 of debt on average.

Overall, the research found that the average household has now amassed unsecured debts of 4,281.

Padgett, Patterson and White are region's best trio inside in years

At the University of Louisville, senior David Padgett outplayed Georgetown All-American Roy Hibbert in upsetting the Hoyas. Indiana University senior D.J. White willed the Hoosiers past Ohio State to yet another road victory and sole possession of second place in the Big Ten Conference. And University of Kentucky freshman Patrick Patterson did what he usually does, with 12 points and seven rebounds while playing all but one minute in a win over Alabama.

Can you remember the last time all three schools were this good in the post? At the same time?

DirecTV Turns Credit Crisis Into Competitive Advantage

The satellite TV operator just reported a very good quarter with 17% year-over-year revenue growth and 21% higher operating profits excluding depreciation and amortization. But the best number in the whole report was the lowest monthly subscriber churn in eight years at a paltry 1.42% -- and I don't think DirecTV would have achieved this without the consumer credit crisis.

CEO Chase Carey wanted to give kudos to the accelerating adoption of high-def receivers and digital video recorders. Competitors like Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) often make the same case, so I can't really dis Carey's argument too much. Those addictive services really do help broadcasters hold on to their subscribers longer.

Trump has made us look like a nation of parochial bumblers

I am sure he will investigate it thoroughly and professionally and will communicate with all parties involved. He is a man of integrity, honesty and dignity. Quite an unknown personality and character for the unionists in a politician but there you go. The SNP are lucky to have him on side. Ian McWhirter says he was playing golf in the US just a couple of days before the calling in. Erm...I don't think golf is Mr Swinney's thing, perhaps it was a game of pitch and putt. Mr Swinney lives in a constituency surrounded by championship and other excellent golf courses and has never attempted the game as far as the locals know. We would know of course as we have a very effective grapevine here, so Ian, just a wee slip up in your reporting. .

McCain Seen As Clear Frontrunner After Florida Win

In the biggest GOP primary contest to date, John McCain yesterday won the Florida showdown with Mitt Romney. With 99% of precincts reporting, McCain led with 36%, followed by Mitt Romney with 31%, Rudy Giuliani with 15%, Mike Huckabee with 13%, and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas with 3%. Media reports are portraying McCain's win as a fundamental watershed in the race for the GOP nomination, one that appears to make McCain the clear frontrunner and put him in a strong position as attention turns to next week's Super Tuesday contests.
