My father had his own business, a clothing store, which he inherited from his father. He travelled abroad frequently and was quite extravagant, so we had skiing holidays and summer holidays on the beach. I never really learned the value of money. My father didn't spoil me, but I think my grandparents did.

He promised the Conservatives that he would look again at finding more money for extra police officers and at accelerating the introduction of a promised business-rate cut.To assuage the Greens, he said the Scottish Government would in future insist on a "carbon" assessment of the next spending review and repeated it would not continue the £6 million fund to set up new airline routes to and from Scotland.Mr Swinney also pledged to give more money to Edinburgh council to recognise the city's status as the capital, one of Ms MacDonald's key demands. After a day of tension at Holyrood, the final vote saw Labour and the Lib Dems round on the Conservatives and their leader, Annabel Goldie, for supporting the SNP administration.Tavish Scott, the Lib Dem finance spokesman, said: "The Tories deserve nothing but derision for having sold their votes to the SNP for a half-baked promise.

'Untraceable' is a tangled web

Such apparent hypocrisy wouldn't be so bad if the film worked as either a suspense thriller or an airtight whodunit. But Untraceable, about a killer who tortures his victims on the Internet while inviting the rest of the world to watch, abandons any pretense of mystery by revealing the degenerate's identity about a third of the way through.

Diane Lane, far-too-often better than the movies she's stuck in, plays Jennifer Marsh, an Internet specialist with the FBI. Her job is to track down the Web's bad guys, most of whom steal people's credit card numbers and go on big-time buying sprees. One thing the movie does do well is force us to ponder the wisdom of inviting computers into our homes so wholeheartedly, considering how much evil can be accomplished through them.

Gadgets HD DVD Group Cancels CES Press Conference, 1:1 Meetings

The news just continues to sour for the HD DVD camp. Earlier today, DailyTech reported that Warner Bros. decided to go Blu-ray exclusive by the end of May 2008. Warner Bros. executives backed their decision by saying that the move was beneficial for consumers.

"A two-format landscape has led to consumer confusion and indifference toward high definition, which has kept the technology from reaching mass adoption and becoming the important revenue stream that it can be for the industry," stated Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group President Kevin Tsujihara.

Toshiba, clearly stunned by the announcement, issued a press release of its own stating its disappointment with the decisions by Warner Bros.

"We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and valuate potential next steps," said Toshiba in a statement.

AXA bars withdrawals from property fund

INVESTMENT manager AXA said overnight that it has barred redemptions from two of its main UK property funds for up to six months as it fights to avert firesales in the wake of a UK commercial property slump.

The two funds -- the AXA Life Property and AXA Pension Property funds -- had a combined value of £2.2 billion ($4.95 billion) at the end of 2007 -- about £500 million ($1.13 billion) less than 6 months earlier, according to data from Lipper, a subsidiary of Reuters. It was unclear how much of the fall in the size of the funds was due to investors withdrawing money, given an average drop in commercial property valuations over the period of almost 12 per cent. AXA declined to give more details but a factsheet on its website showed its life fund lost 8.8 per cent in 2007.
