Yaqui casinos: 'More money, more problems'

Phil Harden plays the slot machines at Casino del Sol on the Pascua Yaqui reservation southwest of Tucson. The casino has helped to fund several projects and benefits for the tribe, including heath care and continuing education, but the millions in revenue gambling generates also has led to questions about where it all goes and created bitter divisions among tribal members. .

Larry Lessig Officially Considers Run For Congress

While techies like to loudly complain about the music industry's intellectual property, tech companies would be nothing if anybody could copy software or hardware designs whenever they wanted. Strangely, nobody complains about the intrusive anti-piracy software that comes with applications.

Stupid comment. There is not one single tech company today that is making a profit from untouched 14-year old code. Copyright could be rolled back to a term of 14 years (without even the option of extending it another 14 years) and it would not make one bit of difference to the tech industry.

Oh so it looks like all those commercial Linux distros couldn't possibly be making and money with everyone, even their competitors copying their software for free.

3500 pupils can’t speak English

When that has been done we can use the partnership that exists between councils and the government to identify the gaps in resources and pull together a national strategy for addressing these challenges."

A Scottish Government spokeswoman said: "Under the Budget agreement with local authorities there should be sufficient money to deal with these issues."

Before you check bags, check your airline’s baggage policy

Before you take your next flight, check the baggage policy of your airline.

Recent changes could cost you if you don't know the rules.

US Airways, one of Columbia's dominant carriers, said last week it would start charging fliers $25 to check in a second bag. The new charge will begin May 5.

About 8 percent of US Airways customers check more than one bag. Under the new program, fliers will get one checked bag free plus their carry-on bags. US Airways already charged customers who checked between two and nine bags $80 per extra bag, and they are now boosting that charge to $100.

Those in the company's frequent flier programs who reach preferred status won't have to pay the fee, nor will those flying first class. The carrier also will waive the baggage charge for active military personnel, unaccompanied minors and customers checking assistance devices.

Election Madness

His letters to me have always been angry, railing against our capitalist system for its failure to assure "life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness" for working people.

Just today, a letter came. To my relief it was not handwritten because he is now using e-mail: "Well, I'm writing to you today because there is a wretched situation in this country that I cannot abide and must say something about. I am so enraged about this mortgage crisis. That the majority of Americans must live their lives in perpetual debt, and so many are sinking beneath the load, has me so steamed. Damn, that makes me so mad, I can't tell you. . . . I did a security guard job today that involved watching over a house that had been foreclosed on and was up for auction. They held an open house, and I was there to watch over the place during this event.

Theft devices found on ATMs in Bear Wawa

Two automated teller machines at a Bear convenience store were rigged to retain the card numbers and personal codes of every user, police said Monday, so that thieves using an increasingly popular identity-theft technique could pilfer their accounts.

Phishing coders hook clueless crooks

Cheapskate fraudsters hoping to run phishing scams for peanuts have themselves been hoodwinked. Security watchers have spotted a free phishing kit containing a hidden backdoor that siphons off stolen credentials from the fraudsters who use the technology.

Script kiddies are unlikely to twig that captured credit card numbers are being shared with the coders who developed the phishing kit, a recurrent group of Moroccan fraudsters calling themselves Mr-Brain.

Dems Should Thank Nader, Not Trash Him

Hillary Clinton blamed Ralph Nader this weekend for Al Gore's 2000 loss to George W. Bush. She's hardly the first to make such a statement, but the comment reveals the patronizing attitudes that still pervade her party.

Barack Obama wasn't much nicer, saying Nader "did not know what he was talking about" when he claimed there was no difference between Bush and Gore.

But it's Clinton's comments that really got to me: She said categorically that Nader "is responsible for George W. Bush." She's wrong. You know who is "responsible" for Bush being elected? Gore. The Democratic Party. The American public. I first became aware of Nader as a high-school senior in 1996. I didn't get to vote that year - the election was held about five weeks before I turned 18 - but I would have voted for him.

DAVID LEASK and DOUGLAS FRASER

The research represents a vital contribution to a debate over whether Scotland should take on more tax-raising powers or become independent. Our findings come amid a growing clamour from English politicians and the London-based media to curb Scotland's £26bn spending grant from the Treasury.

But, as The Herald shows, much of this mischief is based not on facts but a series of myths, mistakes and misconceptions.
