| Credit card industry tries to hook young people
All major banking institutions pay big money to colleges and universities for on-campus recruiting rights, offering students low initial interest rates and/or other sweetheart deals if they accept a credit card. The rest of us get solicitations through our phone or the mails.Seductive sales campaigns focus on high school graduates and for all kinds of items that TV, movies or society has told them they want, need, should have because they deserve it and others have, so why don't they? Car dealers offer "one-time sales events" to first-time wage earners, high-end electronic stores give 90-day-same-as-cash deals and guarantee that no one will be turned down, furniture showrooms offer newlyweds "no payments 'til next year," cell phones, Internet providers, cable companies, satellite dish outfits all make it sound as if you can't have a decent life without their help. All this has given birth to an additional parasite - the debt-consolidation, paycheck-cashing, payday-loan, instant-refinancing-of-your-car (and you get to keep your car - 'til they come to take it away) industry.Public schools teach kids how to drive, play sports, fit a condom, take birth control pills, find an abortionist or fill out a job application at McDonald's.
Some more posturing in a fascinating, nasty case
As we know, it's a nasty case. But, at least from this perspective, it's also fascinating. For instance, Rodriguez's lawyer Marv Robon said in order for the school to win the full $4 million the coach would have to lose every element of his arguments. Interesting. My understanding was the school simply had to show it was damaged by $4 million. (Heck, the school might have lost that in ticket and television revenue when blue-chip recruit Terrelle Pryor said adios.) I'll also be interested to see what part, if any, Shredder-gate plays in this case. When reached Tuesday afternoon, WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong said the investigation still hasn't concluded. He said the school's legal department and the Department of Public Safety have been handling the affair and there's "nothing to report at this time." What about Rodriguez's claim he had a secret deal with WVU president Mike Garrison? Will we have a "he-said; he-said'' showdown? Will it be a "push?'' Or will the light be cast poorly on one? What reaction will we see if that's Garrison? .
Banks v Treasury
As it stands today, we know that only one UK bank is so sick it's on life support. This gives people the confidence to deal with the OTHER banks. Once the law is in effect, you'll have no way of knowing who deserves trust. It'll hurt the good banks at the expense of the bad. .

The Latest Headlines...
This reporter purchased tickets on Craigslist.com on Saturday afternoon. "Okay, you're the only media in here," Corluka said, a few songs into the concert. "We'll see if you're fair. We'll see." The attempted journalist blockade might have raised the expectations bar a little high. No offense, Mr. Corluka, but musically Perkovic and his band are kind of mundane; they sound, at moments, like the Gipsy Kings doing "Dust in the Wind." The charm of songs like "Geni Kameni" is perhaps in the lyrics -- and they don't translate all that well: Genes, genes made of stone A fire burns within me Genes, genes made of stone That's the way we are born Take it or leave it. This, of course, sounds different to Croatian ears.
Wet weather not quite over just yet
Most of the heavy rainfall will occur before noon Sunday, Sullivan said. Across the region, traffic incidents related to the wet weather were relatively minor Thursday night and Friday morning. In Rancho Cucamonga, officials at West Valley Detention Center held up prisoner visits for about an hour Friday morning to clean up water that had accumulated in the hallway of the visitors area, said Jodi Miller, San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman. wes.woods@dailybulletin.com (909) 483-9378 WEATHER FORECAST Temperatures today should reach a high of 61 degrees with clouds and sunshine while tonight will cool to 48 degrees with rain in the evening, according to AccuWeather.com. Does Congress/White House fit the bill? Included in this opinion article is a link to a 9-11 truth article which is the most indicting I have ever seen, where Bush and Cheney's pre-911 planning is concerned. No conspiracy theorists here: Only CIA agents, Senators, and FBI agents are quoted. This could be one of the most important articles you will ever read: Check it out and please pass this on! Thursday, January 17: Stephen Soldz: American and California Psychological Associations move to gut bill on interrogations A major battle is shaping up in California where a coalition is working to remove health providers from participating in military and CIA interrogations.
Barack Obama and Me
I sure wish American would start evaluating the facts, the credentials and the experience of this candidate, before we make the massive mistake of handing the presidency to more of the same aka John McCain. If we want a Democratic nominee that will take us to the White House....VOTE HILLARY CLINTON. And my vote will proudly be awarded to you. Congratulations on wading the storm and I look forward to the victory that will be March 4th. Comment by Lauren — February 27, 2008 @ 08:12PM I have to agree with some of the earlier writers. I'm an Obama supporter, and there's some fascinating juicy stuff in this piece. But, there's a few points that make you lose credibility... but they lead to honesty. The jive talking line, the fact that he didn't get to respond to your negative article (or this article), all of it shows a narrowness of your perspective.
The Leonard Lopate Show
How can someone minimize the potentially lethal effects of foods on kids? You are a horrible, horrible station to give this interview. This is a horrible person. We had a child almost die from ingesting dairy. While not all kids are allergic to food, and even if it's overblown, so what!!!!!!! Isn't it better to be safe. Saying that it's in the self-interest of FAAN or whatever it is to promote labeling on products is just stupid. What is wrong with better labeling? Isn't it better to know what is contained in our food that not? The smugness of the interviewer is truly, truly obnoxious. Oh, it's so overblown these allergies. And so what if the rate has been increasing, decreasing, or staying the same. There is a problem and if we don't deal with it, some kids will die. I'd like to know just what the author knows about statistical significance.
